Bahia Grass

(pronounced buh-HAY-uh)

~  See actual photo's below ~

I have done a lot of research on this grass because of the nightmare it has created in our  yard.

*****************************

I was told this grass was brought here to Texas back when the 610 loop was being built because the rains (believe it or not it did used to rain alot here back then) would wash out lots of the work done to make the loop and those rains were causing lots of delays in the completion of the 610 loop.

This grass called Bahia Grass comes from Brazil and has roots from h _ _ _ once it takes root which helps in keeping the soil in place so it stays put and it also is drought resistant when there isn't any rain.

This sounded like the perfect grass needed to help with the construction of building roads in Texas.

It also had a interesting fact of not being easy to die which made it good for the cattle to eat and the farmers who raise them because it is so easy to maintain as it keeps the soil from washing away when it rains alot and it grows happily when there isn't any rain.

Perfect right????????

NO NOT for our lawns and is now spreading like wild fire here in Texas lawns! This is not Dallas Grass!!!

Look around, I know you see these Y shaped, wheat like stalks growing in the entrances and streets in our subdivisions where the grass has just been mowed less than a week ago.

Bahia has a natural fact of shooting up a stalk within 2 days of being mowed. These stalks with seed on them get knee tall within 3 days and any lawn or grassy area that has this Bahia Grass growing in it looks like a wheat feild in 3 days after being mowed. The Bahia Grass root also grows in a twisted vine in the soil that cannot be killed even with round up. It just keeps coming back. To dig it up is a night mare because the root system is un-beleivable and hard to get it all. It would maybe be the perfect grass for Texas if not for the horrible stalks. But I don't need to mow my lawn every 2 days to keep the lawn from looking like a wheat field just to have this grass in my yard. It gets too hot here!! Someone needs to find a REAL way to get rid of this Bahia grass instead of like us . . . we had to have all the top of our yard removed after spraying with every suggested chemical to get rid of it (that didn't) and all new St. Augustine brought in and put down. We now have our normal nice yard back, but are always on the lookout for that stalk which we still see at times and then go after (very fast) with a shovel to dig up and don't miss any root because we know what that will make happen quicker than you can really imagine and too late to just kill a spot..................it's back!!!

These are all young Bahia (not as bad as it gets)

When older the roots get thicker and longer.

When more mature the roots have a purple cast to part of it.

Bahia Grass all have a Y shaped seed stalk

This is how you can tell it is Bahia along with how the root looks
